Mariah Schultz looks foward to ‘sharing Christ’. Studying at the University of Minnesota was Mariah Schultz’s post-secondary plan before a “conversion moment” changed her heart. Now, the 2014 graduate of Spooner High School will spend one year sharing her faith as a member of a NET (National Evangelization Teams) Ministries.
High school and junior high students from the Diocese of Superior rallied around the sacraments March 26 in River Falls. Between 400 and 450 teens traveled to St. Bridget Catholic Church for the annual Diocesan Youth Rally. Another 100 were expected to watch via a live feed. This year, for the first time, teens from the eastern side of the diocese could go to St. Peter the Fisherman Parish, Eagle River, and join the rally from afar. Organizers hoped the technological bridge would close the geographical gap. “It’s just to bring our diocese together for some unity,” said Peggy Schoenfuss, diocesan director of Catholic faith formation and superintendent of schools.
Hundreds of thousands of marchers converged on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to affirm the most basic human right — the right to life — on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Among them were youths, chaperones and religious leaders from the Diocese of Superior. “We had a great time,” said Megan Noll, diocesan director of marriage, family and youth programs.
Three Boy Scouts and a deacon were honored with religious emblems at a ceremony June 7 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, River Falls. Shawn Derks, 11, and Darin Derks, 11, achieved their Parvuli Dei medals. Mitchell Wolf, 15, earned his Ad Altare Dei medal, and Deacon Larry Hennemann, who serves St. Bridget, was awarded the Bronze Pelican for his work as a camp chaplain. The religious emblem program has been in existence since the 1930s, according to Dr. George Battis, chair of the Twin Cities’ Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting. Cub Scouts ages 6-7 can earn the Light of Christ, designed to help them develop a closer relationship with Jesus; ages 8-10 can achieve the Parvuli Dei by exploring the presence of God in their lives as members of a family and parish.
Extreme Faith Camp is a weeklong camp for middle school students. Extreme Faith Camp is a weeklong camp for middle school students.
Relationships are the most effective evangelization tool in Fr. Patrick McConnell’s ministry. “Programming is good, but only as good as the relationship you develop,” he said. “You have to do that by entering into their world.” Ordained in 2012, Fr. McConnell serves as associate pastor at St. Patrick, Hudson. There, he endeavors to evangelize the young by going beyond church walls.
